We will be changed when we have a personal relationship with God.
Prayer does not change God. Perhaps the author of this fortune cookie was thinking that trying to pursuade God to change his circumstances. But after praying, he realized that it is him who needed to be changed.
We can only change ourselves and our boundaries and our reactions.
